What is a herniated disc?

A herniated disc is also called a slipped disc or a bulging disc. The job of this disc is to act as a cushion between the vertebrae in the back, preventing the vertebrae from rubbing against each other and compression nerves. Sometimes, these discs can rupture. This can cause liquid to leak throughout the spine, leading to pain.

Will my herniated disc require surgery?

How do I know if my disc has herniated?

The most common discs to herniate are those between L3 and L4 along with L4 and L5. If someone has a herniated disc, they usually feel a sharp pain in the back. Then, this pain radiates down the back and into one of the legs. The pain may get better or worse depending on the position in which someone sits or stands. Sometimes, imaging can confirm which disc has herniated, helping to plan the treatment process.
