What Causes Pain in the Upper Back?

The mid and upper back are kept stable by the thoracic spine which connects to the cervical spine in the neck and lumbar spine in the lower back. Upper back pain occurs primarily when injury, wear and tear, illnesses, degenerative disc disease, or lifestyle habits cause spinal bones, joints, or discs to shift out of position leading to subluxation (spinal misalignment). This then puts pressure on intervertebral disc or compress nerves in the spinal cord. Nerves, muscles, tendons, and ligaments can get irritated or inflamed also causing pain. Common causes of pain include:

    • Stress
    • Poor posture
    • Frequent overhead lifting
    • Back injury from an auto accident
    • Herniated or bulging discs
    • Scoliosis
    • Compression fractures
    • Osteoarthritis
    • Fibromyalgia
    • Muscle sprains or strains

Symptoms of Upper Back Pain

    • Sharp stabbing or burning pain
    • Muscle stiffness or tightness
    • Numbness, tingling, or weakness
    • Pain radiates to the shoulder, neck, chest, abdomen, lower back, or legs

How Pain in the Upper Back is Diagnosed

Our Fairfax chiropractor will take into account your symptoms, lifestyle habits, accident history, family history, and results from the physical and spine exams when diagnosing your condition. X-rays and MRIs are useful for viewing the backbone to determine the cause of pain.

How Our Chiropractor Will Treat Your Upper Back Pain

Dr. Frey may treat you using one or more chiropractic care techniques. Spinal adjustment using gentle thrusts is beneficial in helping to pull the joints back into position and relieve pressure that caused the discs to bulge or herniation. Spinal manipulation also relieves pain linked to nerve compression. In some cases, spinal decompression may be performed using motorized traction to stretch the spine and pull material from bulging or herniated discs back into the discs. Decompression therapy also eliminates spinal cord compression and eases the pain. Massage therapy and rehabilitative exercises have proven to be beneficial for relaxing, strengthening, and healing affected muscles and soft tissues.
